However, the tournament was cancelled after most of the member countries failed to confirm their participation leaving the organisers with no option but to call off the event as only three countries — Zimbabwe, South Africa and Malawi had confirmed their commitment to compete.
Winners of the zonal tournament would have progressed to the continental competitions set to start at the end of this month. Participants will compete in four categories — the youth boys, youth girls, junior men and junior women. The competitions will be held in four different countries — Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Nigeria.
ZVA president, Frederick Ndlovu said they have to revisit the situation since they now have to apply directly to the Confederation of African Volleyball to take part in the continental games, which are acting as the qualifiers for the World Youth Championships to be held later this year.
“The Zone did not get enough confirmation from the member countries so they felt it was not worthy it for people to incur those huge costs.
“The teams that have the capacity will now have to apply to CAVB directly for the next stage, which is the continental games and they are spread over Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Nigeria. The winners will go to represent Africa at the World championships,” said Ndlovu.
