Two men yesterday appeared in court for impersonating Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and members of the Central Intelligence Organisation, duping an unsuspecting man of $3 000. Tarisai Rugare Chiriga (24) and Tinashe Muwandi (33) were charged with impersonation when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo. The court heard that Chiriga would call the complainant purporting to be VP Mnangagwa and demand money from him.
Allegations are that in November, Chiriga and Muwandi introduced themselves to the complainant as members of the Central intelligence Organisation. It is alleged that Chiriga started demanding money from the complainant threatening his life if he did not comply. The court heard that Chiriga then received $3 000 from the complainant.
He was arrested on December 14, when he had come to receive another $60 and some documents originated by him claiming that he was a member of the CIO were recovered. Muwandi was later arrested at his residence in Kuwadzana 1 in Harare.
Prosecutor, Ms Sharon Mashavira, told the court that the two were not proper candidates for bail. Chiriga was said to have once furnished the police with a wrong residential address and the two also have pending matters at the same court facing similar offences.
Mr Makomo deferred the matter to January when the two are expected to make a bail application.
