Indian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Surinder Datta, says his country is determined to enhance cooperation between the two countries. Briefing journalists soon after meeting Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa at his Munhumutapa offices yesterday, Mr Datta, who started his tour of duty two months ago, said discussions were ongoing to explore cooperation in wide ranging areas.
“It was a fruitful meeting. We discussed many issues. There is an ongoing discussion on cooperation between the two countries in the field of agriculture, health, lines of credit, mining,” said Mr Datta.
He said India was assisting in the refurbishment of power plants in Harare, Bulawayo and Hwange through Indian Exim Bank.
The support is expected to increase power generation to the national grid.
A team of Indian experts have been resident in Hwange to assist local artisans to manage and maintain the plant.
India has also been trading with Zimbabwe in buying diamonds for cutting and polishing as Mumbai has become one of the biggest global economic players.
“There is also an interest in increased cooperation in the area of tourism through the support of India Exim Bank,” he said.
Zimbabwe has also secured financial support from India Exim Bank on various agricultural activities that include mechanisation.
Cooperation between the two countries has also existed in sports where cricket teams have played in various international tournaments.
The area of health has also been another field of cooperation where most Zimbabweans have gone to Mumbai to seek medical treatment.
Zimbabwe and India enjoy good bilateral relations dating back to the liberation struggle that saw Harare attain its independence in 1980.
