Plans are underway to refurbish Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), equip them with latest information communication technologies so that they can offer demand-driven short courses that address local challenges using internal resources, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister, Tino Machakaire, has said.
He was speaking on Wednesday at the graduation of 540 students from Chaminuka Vocational Training Centre (Chamtech).
The students graduated in agriculture, cosmetology, automobile electrics and electronics, brick and block laying, carpentry and joinery, clothing and textile, electrical power engineering and metal fabrication.
“The ministry is working to ensure that vocational training centres are refurbished and equipped with modern tools, enabling graduates to enter the industry with the necessary technical expertise and work standards,” he said.
“All vocational training centres must have ICT infrastructure and internet connectivity to ensure the acquisition of digital skills in line with modernisation efforts.”
Minister Machakaire expressed admiration for Chamtech’s ability to develop projects into commercial business units, ensuring the centre’s financial sustainability.
He encouraged all vocational training centres to establish innovative and sustainable business units.
“Treasury’s resources are limited and there is need to generate more funds through the production of quality goods and services for local and export markets,” he said.
Minister Machakaire encouraged graduates to start businesses in their communities and contribute to household income and the national economy.
“These graduates are equipped to contribute to the national vision of becoming an empowered and prosperous upper middle-income society by 2030, with ample job opportunities and a high quality of life,” he said.
