LIBERATION war veterans deserve to be treated with respect and honour and should equally enjoy the benefits of what they fought for, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Mandi Chimene has said.Speaking at the joint burial of two liberation war heroes Cdes Alice Munyongani and Olga Ndlovu, who died on February 22 and 23, respectively, at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes’ Acre on Wednesday, Cde Chimene said war veterans and their families deserved all the privileges they fought for and should enjoy the fruits of their sweat and blood.
Hundreds of mourners, including families of the two cadres as well as Government officials thronged the provincial heroes’ acre to pay their last respects to the gallant fighters whom many described as consistent and unwavering fighters.
“It is a public secret that some of them are staying in rented apartments and they don’t have normal accommodation. It is sad that they are actually paying rent to people who never fought for this country. Some of them don’t own even the smallest pieces of land, yet they sacrificed their lives to liberate this country. They should enjoy the fruits of their sacrifices,” said Cde Chimene.
She said Manicaland Province had been robbed of dedicated cadres who were consistent and unwavering in fighting and defending the gains of the hard won independence.
“The two cdes played an equally important and uncontested role in the liberation struggle. It is their loyal participation in the national and developmental cause that the nation found it fit and proper to confer them provincial liberation war hero statuses,” he said.
She hailed their humility, integrity and consistence in serving national values.
Cde Ndlovu joined the Zimbabwe National Army in 1981 before he retired in 1996. He ventured into farming and established himself in Dora where he grew various small grains. He is survived by wife, Jennifer, three children and three grandchildren.
Cde Manyongani also did her farming activities at Plot 16, Premier Central Old Mutare.
She is survived by three children and five grandchildren.
