THE Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) will hold its provincial elections at the end of this month after successfully holding its national elective congress in Gweru.
The electoral college in each province will consist of members of the national executive from that province plus current provincial and district executive members.
Speaking at a press conference in Harare yesterday, the newly-elected ZNLWVA Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Cornelius Muwoni, outlined the next steps.
“After the election of the national executive, we are now planning for the provincial elections which are supposed to be taking place soon. We have set November 30 as a provisional date for the elections.
“We are so happy that with the new executive, we do not doubt that the same scenario that happened during the national executive should be the same scenario that should happen at provincial level. The elections will sail through properly and peacefully. We always anticipate to host successful elections,” said Cde Muwoni.
After the provincial elections, Cde Muwoni said children of war veterans are also expected to hold their elections.
“The children are planning to hold their elections, but only after setting up structures so that we will assist them in holding their own elections,” he said.
Cde Muwoni acknowledged the acceptance of the new executive by President Mnangagwa who is the patron of the association.
“We have been accepted as the legitimate representatives or national executive of the war veterans association. We are extremely grateful to President Mnangagwa for endorsing our executive,” he said.
Cde Muwoni was flanked by the association’s secretary-general Cde Sam Parirenyatwa and Vice Chairperson of the association Cde Shorai Nyamangondo.
Cde Nyamangondo said the association’s major focus was to unite the war veterans across the board and make sure their welfare was addressed.
Cde Cephas Ncube is the newly elected executive chairman of the association after taking over from Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa, who was at the helm of the association from 2013.
ZNLWVA’s last elective congress was held in Masvingo in 2013, where Cde Mutsvangwa and his executive were elected.
