‘Waste no Waste’ at Gallery next month

The Friends of the Gallery and the Italian Ambassador, His Excellency Enrico de Agostini will be hosting the 2015 Fund Raising Auction on May 14, under the waste management theme —“Waste no Waste: Trash is Treasure”. The inclusion of schools, established artists, celebrities, captains of industry and the diplomatic community will engage different sectors of society and allow them to contribute towards a worthy cause.

First, a selected group of leading artists will be commissioned by captains of industry and corporations to paint on rubbish bins at an event in the penthouse of the National Gallery on May 9.

This particular event, which will launch this year’s F.O.G. Fundraising Drive, will be televised and co-hosted by the Italian Ambassador and members of the NGZ board. The bins will then be donated to the City of Harare and placed at various locations throughout the city, as part of the “Keep Harare Clean” Campaign.

The second component of the Fund Raising drive is an invitation to established artists to produce works using recycled materials. The works will then be entered into a competition and the winners will be auctioned on May 14.

As in last year’s edition, the established artists will be joined by illustrious amateurs who will compete with each other with their works on tin cans, displayed anonymously and judged by the invitees.

Finally, schoolchildren from all over Zimbabwe have been invited to submit posters on this theme of environmental responsibility. The winning posters will be printed on rubbish bins and these will also be placed throughout the city of Harare. All school entries should be in by May 7 and contact should be made with Akim Nyakudya, education officer of the NGZ and also coordinator of the schools.

Marcey Mushore, the coordinator of Friends of the Gallery, is very excited about combining creativity from all sectors of the community and she believes this will be a vehicle for spreading awareness of waste management throughout society.

All funds raised will be donated to the National Gallery’s Permanent Collection.
