Each morning, before the hustle and bustle of the day began, they grabbed brooms, trash bags, and gloves, and set out to tidy up their neighbourhoods.

President Mnangagwa launched the national clean-up programme in December 2018 based on moral persuasion urging all citizens to clean their environment between 8 am and 10 am on the first Friday of every month.

In Bulawayo today, the main campaign was along Samuel Parirenyatwa from 15th Avenue right up to the Zimbabwe Exhibition Centre.

In an interview the acting Mayor Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo who also chairs the health housing and community services said it’s important for residents to remember that a cleaner Bulawayo is dependent on everyone playing their part.

“We call upon all residents to actively participate in the programme implemented by Government which was launched by our President years ago. We should understand that indeed ilizwe lakhiwa ngabaninilo hence we are here to clean our city. Soon we will be hosting exhibitors and visitors for the 64th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair,” said Cllr Khumalo.

Local businesses and residents also embraced the initiative, recognising the importance of maintaining a clean environment for their customers and employees.

They encouraged their staff to take part, organising group clean-up efforts and providing resources to support the cause.
