On 29 June, cars and spinning enthusiasts were treated to a stellar performance at the fourth edition of the famous Burn Outs which were held at ZKS Spinners Arena, with drivers and drifters from all over Zimbabwe showcasing what they know best.
ZKS Spinners Arena is located at Emthunzini in Bulawayo, near Khami Dam and it was created by businessman Zakhele Mlilo after realising the shortage in venues for hosting drifting and spinning events.
The show saw different drivers tasting the turf and these include Ingwazi Ezimnyama, Team Ice, King Fly, AK 47, Malankane, The Rock, Mac D, Savior, S’Bahle, Amakhosi, Team Ghost as well as Dirty Damian.
To put cherry on top of the cake, Enock Construction and Earth Moving Equipment Company sponsored the competition to the tune of US$1000, which was given to the gold, silver and bronze winners.
From all the contestants, Ak-47 won the gold award which was worth US$500, Simon Santos won the silver accolade which was worth US$300 while Tembo and Saviour bagged US$200 for winning the bronze accolade.
The winners were chosen by audience’s vote and the trio came out the favorites.
Mlilo, who is the founder of ZKS Spinners Arena, said the activities at the arena have been growing and they are grateful for the car enthusiasts they have managed to attract at their events.
He congratulated the winners and encouraged them to continue bringing their fighting spinning at the same time providing entertainment to those who enjoy and appreciate drifting.
“I would like to start by congratulating the winners at the event for they deserved to win considering that they were crowned by the crowd who paid attention to their performance.
“This initiative has been going on for a while now and we are grateful for the success and support we have received from the people of Bulawayo and beyond. This is a relatively new project and sport, so we are trying hard to make it popular in the city and provide a different kind of entertainment to car lovers and those who are not.
“Considering the number of people who attended the event over the weekend we are proud to say we are on the right path. I would also like other companies to come on board and partner with us and make the shows more interesting.
“Also I would like to give thanks to Enock Construction and Earth Moving Equipment Company for sponsoring the event with money prizes which were given to the winners in cash,” said Mlilo.
Drifting and spinning are driving techniques that involve deliberately losing traction and controlling the car through sharp turns or circles. The drivers often get out of their moving cars and strike poses, adding to the drama and flair of the performance.
The sport is popular in Western countries, but relatively new in Bulawayo. The most common cars used for spinning are the BMW E30, Nissan Skyline andToyota Corollas
