Comedian Frank Chirisa continues to raise the country’s flag high after delivering a standout headline set at the renowned Bioscope Sundays comedy showcase in Johannesburg this past weekend.
His performance left the audience roaring with laughter and drew glowing praise from event hosts and a leading South African comedy promoter.
Chirisa shared the headline slot with South African comic Mbali Gudazi, while Dillan Oliphant and Mo Mothebe opened the evening with strong sets that warmed up the packed venue.
Known for his sharp observational humour, energetic stage presence and distinctly Zimbabwean flavour, Chirisa connected instantly with the crowd. His set, rich with cultural contrasts, everyday quirks and cross-border anecdotes, resonated deeply, earning him repeated applause.
Event hosts Tsitsi Chiumye and Shanray Abrahams commended the Bulawayo-based comedian for his poise and delivery. Chiumye praised his “effortless stage command and brilliant storytelling”, while Abrahams highlighted his “fresh perspective and ability to find humour in the shared human experience”.
Chirisa’s performance also caught the attention of Bexta Ndabalime, one of South Africa’s influential comedy promoters, who was impressed by the Zimbabwean’s rising star power.
Adding further significance to the night, Chirisa had an opportunity to engage with South African comedy heavyweight Robby Collins, a long-time collaborator of Trevor Noah and an internationally respected figure admired by icons such as Dave Chappelle.
Reflecting on the evening, Chirisa said: “Performing at Bioscope Sundays for the second time was truly special. The energy was incredible, and getting such positive feedback means a lot. But the highlight was speaking with Robby Collins. Here’s someone who has walked global stages with Trevor Noah and earned respect from the likes of Dave Chappelle.
“Getting advice and encouragement from him was invaluable. These moments turn a gig into a learning experience and a huge motivation.”
Chirisa’s success at Bioscope Sundays highlights the growing presence of Zimbabwean comedy internationally. Winning over a tough Johannesburg crowd and earning praise from key industry figures shows his talent is on the rise. – Follow on X: @MbuleloMpofu
