CONTROVERSIAL Kumalo Primary School headmistress Stella Mhlanga has finally met her match — in the form of a white Mahindra and a one-way trip to Drill Hall, after being nabbed for embezzling school funds.
Mhlanga, flanked by four other staff members, was arrested on Monday around 2PM, just hours after an explosive audit report blew the lid off shady financial dealings at the school.
Sources say the group was picked up by detectives from the Commercial Crime Unit, under case number CRB 6312/025, and whisked away from the school premises in full view of stunned pupils and parents.
The scandal traces back to February, when the School Development Committee (SDC) flagged “irregularities” in the school’s finances. That triggered a government-led investigation which has now ended in cuffs and chaos.
Though Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele was tight-lipped, police insiders confirmed the arrests are directly linked to the audit findings.
Mhlanga is no stranger to drama.
In 2023, she made headlines after being accused of corruption and even assaulting a fellow teacher. Dig deeper into her history and it gets murkier — in 2015, she was booted from Magwegwe Primary School after angry parents staged protests that got so heated, anti-riot cops had to step in.
Then there was the infamous WhatsApp scandal, where Mhlanga allegedly sent an explicit image by mistake in a school group chat. Though she walked away free, the incident cemented her bad-girl rep in Bulawayo’s education circles.
Last year, she was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, and her deputy, Miss Eneles Sibanda, stepped in as acting head. But in a shocking twist, Mhlanga was quietly reinstated and the hearing was dropped — raising even more eyebrows.
Now with handcuffs replacing her chalk and clipboard, the spotlight is back on her — and this time, it’s serious.
Parents and staff at Kumalo are reeling from the developments, wondering what this means for their children’s future.
