A VIDEO of a tourist alleging he had a run-in with traffic cops in Bulawayo’s CBD has exploded on social media.
The short clip, shot by another motorist, shows the visitor complaining after being flagged down for an alleged traffic violation. He alleges that an InDrive driver was fined after cops accused him of failing to stop at a stop sign. The unnamed tourist insists the driver had stopped.
Netizens accused officers of heavy-handedness or straight-up corruption.
Police did not waste time stepping into the eye of the storm.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the Zimbabwe Republic Police has now launched investigations into the matter.
He said: “Reference is made to a viral video circulating on social media platforms in which a tourist raises concerns regarding a road traffic offence in Bulawayo CBD. The ZRP confirms that investigations are being conducted to find out what truly transpired. More details will be released in due course.”
Commissioner Nyathi has always stressed that police have adopted a zero tolerance to corruption.
“We are clear on our stance. Any officer found on the wrong side of the law will face internal disciplinary action and possible criminal charges. No one is above the law,” the Commissioner has always emphasised.
Bulawayo residents had mixed views. Some feel the tourist could be playing victim for the camera. Others say they stand with him.
A kombi driver said to B-Metro : “Ah mfana, you never know. Sometimes these cops do too much. Sometimes drivers cause drama. Let them investigate. Truth will come out.”
