Oh, hail the queen. Yesteryear musician Sku Mpofu delivered a commanding performance at the National Arts Merit Awards on Saturday night, proving that true talent never fades.
Taking to the stage with confidence and poise, Sku performed her 2005 hit Ungowami, instantly transporting fans back to the golden era of Urban Grooves – a time when locally produced music dominated airwaves and playlists.
“Ungowami baby boy, ungowami baby boy, sohlala sithandana, iba lisoka lam’,” she sang, drawing loud cheers from the crowd as nostalgia swept through the venue.
Her energy, stage presence and vocal strength left many convinced she had never stepped away from the spotlight. Social media platforms were soon flooded with praise, with fans celebrating her polished delivery and effortless command of the stage.
Among those impressed was fellow performer Fab G MshanakaGogo, who shared his excitement after sharing the stage with the Urban Grooves star.
“I was happy to meet and share the Nama24 experience stage with the living legend @Skhu, someone I grew up listening to. She’s still got it like she never left,” he posted.
Beyond her performance, Sku’s fashion choice also turned heads. Dressed in a sleek black suit that exuded authority and star power, she embodied elegance and confidence. Actress Mbo Mahocs praised her look, commenting: “You killed it!!! That suit is giving exactly what it should give – star power and excellence.”
Musician Lady Tshawe added: “Oh, hail the Queen! Welcome back.”
Following the show-stopping appearance, fans have been eager to know whether the performance signals a full-time return to music. In a previous interview, Sku made it clear that her Nama appearance was not merely a nostalgic cameo but a renewed commitment to her craft.
If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, the queen may well be ready to reclaim her throne.
