WATCH: Video of half-a-million-rand party host waving assault rifle surfaces after death

Online Reporter

A disturbing video has emerged of the late Ndumiso M.V. Magogoni Sibanda — the Tsholotsho man who made headlines in 2021 for hosting a half-a-million-rand housewarming party — brandishing an assault rifle while travelling in a car in South Africa.

In the clip, Sibanda in a boastful tone, brags about what he is doing. At one point, he cocks the rifle and threatens to shoot what he claims are South African police officers.

The video, which circulated among some of his acquaintances, paints a portrait of a man seemingly proud of living dangerously on the edge.

Sibanda’s killing drew strong reactions on social media, with many readers saying his end was inevitable. On The Chronicle Facebook page, one reader, David Masehla, claimed Sibanda could have been linked to cash-in-transit gangs, saying his death was “minus one problem for real police officers.”

Others echoed the same sentiment, with Thembie Conjwayo Muti commenting: “You live by the sword, you die by the sword. RIP,” while Doris Mulenga simply wrote: “Minus one problem.”

Admire Focus Sibanda added: “You live by the gun, you die by the gun, simple. There is no other way.”

But not everyone shared that sentiment. Mmaculate Ncube mourned: “Rest in peace zhwane,” while Mtoolice Proe Golide said: “Rest in peace Magogoni💔.” Nkosi Nathi simply asked: “What happened to this boy?”

Where did Sibanda get his money? That is the million-dollar question dominating conversations after he was gunned down in South Africa on Saturday morning.

On the surface, Sibanda appeared to be a successful entrepreneur. Ahead of the half-a-million-rand housewarming party at his homestead in Gwelu Village, Mathetshaneni area in Tsholotsho, he was said to own a juice-making company in South Africa, with branches in Mozambique and plans reportedly underway to open another in Zimbabwe.

In 2021, he told the Chronicle that his company, named Thrive Beverages, was a juice-making business in South Africa, and he hoped to set up another branch in Zimbabwe.

However, an online search on the company’s name in South Africa revealed two entities with names similar to that one. Both are listed in Johannesburg but at different locations. One has a telephone number which was not going through, while the other has no contact details at all.

Even if Sibanda worked in the security sector in South Africa, the behaviour he exhibits in the video is markedly different from the smiling, friendly figure he presented in public.

This alleged criminal lifestyle could not be independently verified, as those who associated with him and knew him better were unwilling to speak on the matter.
