Water crisis persists at Barbourfields

BARBOURFIELDS stadium is a health-ticking time bomb as the facility continues to host thousands of football fans each weekend without a single drop of running water, B-Metro Sport can reveal.

An average of 13 000 fans have attended Highlanders’ last four matches, but authorities continue to ignore calls to supply the stadium with running water, almost a year after supplies were cut off due to pipes that were damaged as a result of road works along Luveve Road.

Last year, Bulawayo City Council city authorities told this publication that the stadium is supplied water by pipes that run under a bridge along Luveve Road, a section of the busy road that underwent major repairs for the greater part of last year.

The repairs are almost done and only tarring of the road is left, but BF still remains with no running water. For the last four games that were attended by thousands of football fans, B-Metro Sports reporters have observed city council workers placing plastic buckets filled with water in toilets at the VIP section of the stadium.

No such facilities are available at other sections of the stadium such as at Empankweni and Soweto stands. As games continue to come thick and fast, fans are at risk of being infected with water-borne diseases such as cholera.

Bulawayo United Residents Association chairman,Winos Dube said it was shocking that Barbourfields Stadium still has no running water.

“It’s very shocking, Last year we were shocked that BF had no water at a critical time when big teams from Harare and so forth were using the stadium but we were promised that the problem would be solved. Bulawayo, like all other cities and towns, is on high alert for a cholera outbreak so it’s shocking that the Bulawayo City Council leadership will allow such a situation to prevail.
