THE Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is not all about running with the race also used to raise funds for various charities supported by the event organisers, one of them being dubbed “water for elephants” which seeks to come up with funding to make available water for wild animals in the Hwange area.

One of the official aid organisation supported by the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, Greenline Africa are running a campaign for the mounting of a solar-powered water pump.

Seeing that Zimbabwe is experiencing a drought, Greenline Africa have realised that the effect on the country’s wildlife is going to be significant, hence the need to find ways of making available water for the animals. Those running in this year’s race, to take place in the resort town on 7 July can choose to make a contribution to this worthy cause.

“With this year’s Econet Victoria Falls Marathon just around the corner, Greenline Africa is running a fundraising campaign ‘Water for Elephants’ to raise much needed funds for the installation of a solar-powered water pump. Those running in this year’s marathon can opt in to help raise money for the much needed solar-powered water pump,’’ the race organisers said.

Greenline Africa are working closely with the Presidential Elephant Research Trust in Hwange, where the solar pump will be installed. The project cost is USD$6 500 and this water pump will provide water for elephants and other wildlife in the Hwange area.

“Whether you are running in the marathon or standing on the sidelines cheering someone on, donate to help Greenline Africa and PERT to raise the much needed funds to help install the solar water pump in Hwange,’’ pleaded the race organisers.

Last year a total of 3 489 runners took part in the various races on offer at the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, these coming from over 54 countries. The registration deadline for this year’s event has been extended to tomorrow with those in charge of the race indicating that if there are still numbers that have not been sold after tomorrow’s deadline, these will be available to purchase on a “first come first serve” basis at number collection which will be held at the Kingdom Hotel in Victoria Falls on 5 and 6 July.
