WE REALLY WISH YOU WERE HERE

THE last time the Warriors played a competitive match, their stars covered more than 75 072 kms to get to Cameroon, for the 2021 AFCON finals.

That was in January last year.

They flew from Iceland, United States, United Kingdom, Georgia, Spain, South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania for the national assignment.

Teenage Hadebe flew from Texas, United States, Kundai Benyu flew from Iceland while Alec Mudimu was then based in Georgia.

They completed their AFCON campaign with a stunning 2-1 win over Guinea after losing their first two matches against eventual champions, Senegal, and Malawi.

The loss to the Teranga Lions was very heart-breaking with the Warriors conceding a last-gasp penalty, which Sadio Mane converted, for the 1-0 win.

The goal came seven minutes into time added on, setting the record for the latest goal ever scored at the Nations Cup finals.

Little did the Warriors know that this would be their last assignment, in a very long time, with FIFA wielding the axe, a few months later, by suspending Zimbabwe from international football.

Had that suspension not been effected, the Warriors would have flown home this week, for their scheduled Nations Cup away qualifier against World Cup semi-finalists Morocco last night.

However, the game was cancelled.

However, this hasn’t stopped us from dreaming about what would have been, memories of our stars, on their flights from various bases, and at airports around the world, all for the service of their motherland.
