Wedding bells for Mosquito

WEDDING bells are ringing for former Commonwealth champion boxer Alfonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika. He is set to wed his sweetheart Jesman Mutokonya on August 6 this year at Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mbare. After he retired from fighting, Zvenyika ventured into talent identification and has started grooming boxers in Mbare. He has opened his boxing stable, the Mosquito Boxing Gym, in Mbare and currently he has about 20 youths training for free at his home.

However, lack of equipment has hampered operations. “Boxing is a relay and there is a lot of potential in the country. First there used to be Proud ‘Kilimanjaro’ Chinembiri, Langton ‘Schoolboy’ Tinago, myself and now we are living in the era of Charles Manyuchi.

“We need to keep producing world boxing champions by training our youngsters. “One can even earn a living through boxing. The Mosquito Gym has gone a long way in taking kids off the streets and they are not involved in criminal activities, alcohol and drug abuse.
