WEDZERA MaWatts poetry slam has been set for August 31.
The slam targets young poets aged 18-35 years and aims to provide a space to explore critical themes such as mental health, climate change youth participation, and governance through the use of spoken word.
Event coordinator, Tapiwa Mutekede, said the slam is set to spark meaningful dialogues and inspire collective action within the community.
He also said the event is set to address the obstacles being faced in the poetry scene in Zimbabwe and how to revive it to contribute to the country’s arts economy.
“This poetry slam aims to ignite meaningful discussions, challenge societal norms, and inspire positive change through the power of spoken word.
“We targeted a younger demographic as they are vital in driving positive change and shaping the future of the country.
“The event will provide a platform for these young poets to not only showcase their skill but to inspire collective action of various challenges being faced in their communities.
“We are also set to address the lack of dedicated platforms and opportunities for young poets in the country which has been the greatest obstacle in the local poetic scene.
“The industry is still dominated by older poets leaving limited space for emerging young voices to be heard and celebrated.
“By addressing this longstanding challenge, there will be growth and development of our industry, ensuring that the powerful voices of the youth are heard,” said Tapiwa.
