WHAT will we get from SUPER MARIO?
Of course, we can’t judge using one game but we can get a glimpse of Marian Marinica’s revolution tonight.
He will lead his men against Algeria in an international friendly in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Kick-off is at 6:30pm.
The Romanian coach has had just one full training session with the squad since arriving in the Middle East.
But, he’s clear about what he wants to see – urgency, intelligence, and bravery.
He’s urging his players to quickly adapt to his high tempo game and show the confidence to impose themselves against an Algeria side that has re-emerged as a powerhouse in African football.
This follows their disappointing 2023 AFCON campaign.
“We had only one session with the full squad before the match, so it’s not really ample time,” Mario said.
“I’m looking to see who understands the philosophy of playing faster, thinking faster, and showing determination.
“I want to see a clear difference between the old way and the new, how we create chances while containing opponents.”
Mario believes the Warriors can compete at a higher level if they play without fear.
He drew lessons from his time with Malawi, whom he helped reach the AFCON last 16 in 2021, and Liberia, saying Zimbabwe shares the same mental hurdle.
“In Zimbabwe, like in Malawi or Liberia, the lesson is simple: we must not be frightened. We must frighten teams.
We have to believe in ourselves, stay positive, attack with intent, but still be cautious because the teams we face can punish even half a mistake.
“We’ve scored only five goals in our last ten matches and not finding the net in the last four is a major concern.
“We need to create more chances and get into dangerous areas quicker.”
He also touched on the mental side of the game, challenging his players to sharpen their decision making.
“Players need to be composed. They must think ahead, like chess, where you plan one or two moves before the ball reaches you.
“That helps them position themselves better and choose the right technique, whether to pass, shoot, or dribble.”
Winger Tawanda Maswanhise said the players are ready to translate the coach’s ideas on the pitch.
“We’re happy with the coach’s philosophy. We’ll try to adjust and bring what he wants from us starting with the Algeria match,” said Maswanhise.
“We want to win so we know exactly where we stand going forward.”
After tonight’s clash, the Warriors will travel to Doha to face Qatar on Monday, wrapping up their international calendar.
