What’s it with sex tapes?

The arrival of cheap digital cameras and recorders, so cheap that most people have one, allows many record just about anything, and unfortunately that includes making “sex tapes”.There have been several sex tapes being leaked involving celebrities among them Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore who was known as the sex godmother in the 1990s. Then came the oft-quoted video starring Kim Kardashian and singer Ray J.

Closer to home we had the South African Khanyi Mbau, whose claim to fame was after her sex tape went viral.

Lately, Zimbabweans have been exposed to sex tapes of all sorts involving relative unknowns whose stars only twinkle after recording themselves making love using the latest electronic gadgets such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and iPads.

From college to university students the habit of recording sex tapes has become common oblivious of the consequences that follow when the tapes are leaked. The most famous one involved rapper Desmond “Stunner” Chideme and his then girlfriend Pokello Nare as well as radio DJ Tinopona Katsande and her ex-boyfriend.

Tinopona Katsande

Almost always it is the women who suffer the most because they allow their partners to remain behind the camera while they get shot in the nude. The reason people make sex tapes is largely for kicks later on.

But more often than not, the sex tape ends up in the public domain. More often-than some people record themselves in bed because they want to see themselves doing it and derive pleasure from that.

Bishop Noah Pashapa said the sex tapes are an indication of moral decay. “This is the age of boundaryless exposure to sex and sexuality values and practices that are defined by thousands of years of Western godlessness and moral decadence and perversion of sex and sexuality which mirrors the beastly sinful tendency in all unredeemed human beings including Africans.

In previous epochs when Christian unhu/ ubuntu religion inspired moral restraint provided morality boundaries for Zimbabweans who did not have unlimited access to decadent, godless and amoral sex and sexuality values and practices of the euro Anglo-American world these sexcapades and sex and sexuality perversions would’ve been regarded as immoral and despicable.

“Nowadays with many Zimbabweans now exposed to and initiated into this moral perversion and decadence which mirrors unredeemed human morality through Diasporean or internet assimilation into these societies sex and sexuality cultures it has become normal and cool to engage in these perversions.

Such perverted pornographic thinking and acts threaten our preferred Christian unhu/ubuntu sex and sexuality values as Zimbabweans and should be socially and legally censured and or penalised as a way of preserving and protecting our moral foundations as a nation in the same way similar perverted and decadent practices such as homosexuality and prostitution should be treated.

“Those who claim to be Christians and engage in such pornographic perverted decadent sexcapades follow a Christian religion which has no Christ in it.

“Genuine believers and followers of Christ live by the moral teachings enshrined in the ten commandments and the teachings of the Old Testament Prophets, in the teachings and life example of Jesus Christ and in the teachings of the New Testament.

These teachings classify such pornographic sexcapades and perversions as a violation of God’s standards and of humans who are created in His image.

“So in my view social and legal censure and punitive penalties to deter Zimbabweans from adopting as normative and acceptable practices such as these that threaten our Christian unhu/ubuntu moral foundations is the preferred corrective,” he said.

Bishop Oliver Chipunza said those who are recording sex tapes were possessed by a demonic spirit of “whoredom” which was against the marriage institution.

“It is a demon which is associated with fornication and adultery which leads people into imaginary sex where they use minds. This is the work of Satan to try and destroy the institution called marriage which is ordained by God.

“It is the spirit called whoredom such that even the way one dresses or wears make-up it shows that the person is not Godly. Satan is now using all sorts of technology through which he controls people,” he said.

Reverend Godwin Chitsinde said although he was not exposed to sex tapes he believed pornography was a crime.

“I believe people who do that should be charged and jailed because they want to corrupt the society. Again, it shows the level of foolishness on the part of those who engage in such acts and it will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

“Imagine if the woman or the man who appears in a sex tapes decides to get married. How will their partners react to that when they discover they once featured in a sex tape?

That is the highest level of foolishness. As the  church we condemn the sex tapes and even in our own culture it is not allowed. What is sad is that overseas the people who do that are college drop- outs and non-achievers but here in Zimbabwe its being done by people whom we least expect it,” Bishop Chitsinde said.

The question is what happens after recording such material. In Zimbabwe recording sex tapes is illegal for as long as the tape becomes public. It appears the sex tapes that have leaked so far are just the tip of the iceberg and more are to come.
