SUNDAY News Editor Hatred Zenenga’s WhatsApp account was hacked, and his contacts, including work colleagues, received text messages asking for money.
This serves as a reminder of the growing threat of WhatsApp hacking and the importance of vigilance among users.
Zenenga’s WhatsApp account was compromised, allowing the hacker to send messages to his contacts, seeking financial assistance.
The hacker claimed to be experiencing issues with his Ecocash account and requested help sending money for treatment.
The message read:
“I’m trying to send some money to someone for treatment, it’s not going through. I have issues with my account; can you help me send it to the person’s account directly?
“I will refund it back immediately (once) my transfer is active.”
When one of Zenenga’s colleagues, aware of the hack, requested banking details, the hacker provided the name Shawn Mataruka, along with an Econet number (0788289329), registered with Ecocash.
This exchange raised several red flags.
The hacker created a sense of urgency, claiming to be in need of help for a medical treatment payment and the message lacked specific details about the treatment or the recipient.
The hacker promised to refund the money immediately, a common tactic to build trust.
WhatsApp hacking is on the rise and users have been urged to remain vigilant.
