Whawha give up on big signings

GWERU-based Premiership side Whawha’s push to secure some heralded players to help them fend off relegation has failed. With three days left before the transfer window closes, Whawha have only managed to make two acquisitions in the form of Nigel Gandari from Dynamos and Clifton Mwale from FC Platinum’s developmental side.

Whawha had set their sights on former Dynamos forward Patrick Khumbula, but he was snatched by neighbours Chapungu, while another target Nelson Maziwisa, who has not been registered by his club FC Platinum, is reluctant to join the prison warders.

The Gweru outfit could not buy out Evans Chikwaikwai from his contract with Dongo Sawmill.

Whawha coach Luke Petros-Jukulile confirmed that the side had failed to capture their intended targets and would make use of the arsenal at their disposal.

“It’s unfortunate that we failed to get the signatures of the players that we had identified to add depth to the side. We’ll work with the players that we have and try to get results. I’m glad that we haven’t been conceding goals like we used to and we’re beginning to find the target, and if this continues, it’ll instil confidence in the youngsters and we could survive relegation,” he said.

However, the club has left three slots, including one for a junior player, open in the hope that they might secure experienced players between now and Friday.

Whawha have so far released Gift Saunyama, who trekked back to Bulawayo where he is studying at Nust, together with Malvern Nyakabangwe and Caleb Masocha, who were deemed excess baggage. The correctional services side have the worst defence in the league. They have let in 30 goals and scored only nine goals from 17 games.
