Wheel thief jailed

A 34-year old Marondera man was on Tuesday sentenced to four years in jail for breaking into people’s homes and stealing their vehicle wheels and batteries. Marondera magistrate Mr Jabulani Mzinyathi convicted Vengai Sanja, who was facing 15 counts of theft, on five counts after the State failed to produce enough evidence on the other counts.

Prosecutor Mr Lovemore Musariyarwa told the court that on the first count Sanja went to Mr Alick Kavasa’s residence in Dombotombo on April 10 this year and used unknown means to open the bonnet of his vehicle and removed a 650 Exide battery. Mr Kavasa only discovered the robbery the next morning and reported the matter to police.

On the other count, the accused went to Mr Owen Mandiwanzira’s home in Nyameni on April 11 and removed a wheel from his VW Polo vehicle. Using the same strategy, Sanja also stole batteries and wheels from other residents’ vehicles. Police received a tip-off that the accused was in possession of stolen wheels and batteries and raided his home. The complainants were called by the police and positively identified their wheels and batteries.
