IT’S not every day a ring causes a man to nearly lose his freedom and US$200 in one go.
A 29-year-old Entumbane man has learnt the hard way that jealousy and jewellery are a dangerous mix after he was dragged to court for allegedly turning into a one-man wrestling federation over a simple finger accessory.
Mthokozisi Mguni (29) appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube facing a charge of physical abuse. All this chaos, the court heard, started because he was fuming over why his ex-girlfriend was wearing a ring.
According to prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, Mguni and the complainant, Andile Ndebele (24), share a child together but are no longer an item. On 8 February at around 6PM, sparks flew when Mguni allegedly questioned why Ndebele had decorated her finger with a shiny band.
Instead of asking “Who bought it?” and moving on like a normal ex, the court heard that Mguni went full Fast and Furious.
He strangled Ndebele with a seat belt, slapped her three times on the left ear and dragged her for about a metre with a motor vehicle before pulling her hair like he was starting a lawnmower.
All over a ring.
The court was told Ndebele sustained a swollen eye and a painful ear and had to seek medical attention. A police report was filed, leading to Mguni’s swift arrest.
Standing before the magistrate, Mguni pleaded guilty to the charge. Ncube fined him US$200, warning that failure to pay before 13 March would result in four months behind bars.
