WHO WILL BE THE STAR?

Bruce Chikuni

WHO will win it William Manondo, Walter Musona, Gift Bello or Elie IIunga?

Will it be won by a goalkeeper – either Wallace Magalane or Nelson Chadya?

Well, today we will get to know the identity of the man who will replace Joel Ngodzo as the Soccer Star of the Year.

The function to honour the winners will be held at Newlands Country Club.

The Soccer Star of the Year winner, and his two runners-up, were voted for by PSL coaches, club captains and sports journalists, two weeks ago.

And, while the 11 were announced soon after the voting, the top three were kept under wraps awaiting tonight’s awards ceremony.

Divine Mhindirira of Highlanders and Dynamos’ defence stalwart, Frank Makarati, could also claim one of the two runners-up slots.

The 2021-22 Castle Lager Premiership campaign capped a sensational year for Musona and Manondo.

Musona’s season took a brilliant turn, just towards the mid-season break, and he was prolific in helping the miners claim their fourth straight league championship.

He stepped up at a time his side had appeared to be running out of gas in their pursuit to retain the title. The 26-year-old scored 14 goals and provided seven assists, the highest in his career.

It was also his first Premiership silverware.

Manondo is probably the reason CAPS United are still in the top-flight league.

He has already secured the league’s Golden Boot for his 17 goals.

Makarati was the heart of the Dynamos’ defence, which kept 18 clean sheets.

He also finished the season as the club’s top scorer after netting five times.

Mhindirira helped Bosso secure a top five finish, despite a forgettable start in the campaign.

Ngezi Platinum Stars, goalie, Chadya and FC Platinum’s Magalane are fighting for the Goalkeeper of the Year prize.

Chadya finished the season leading the Golden Glove race after keeping 19 clean sheets.

But, the PSL spokesperson, Kudzai Bare, told H-Metro that the one who received most votes will take the award regardless of the number of clean sheets they might have received.

Jayden Bakare of Whawha, and Takudzwa Chikosi are hot favourites to scoop the Rookie of The Year award.

Bakare scored nine goals for the Prison Wardens side which was in the relegation waters for the better part of the campaign.

Chikosi kept 15 cleans sheets for the Students and saved four penalties.

FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza, is likely going to get the Coach of the Year prize.

However, the PSL also introduced the Supporters Player of the Season category.

People have been voting for the player of their choice online.
