Argentina VS Croatia
(World Cup — Russia 2018 )
The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on earth, a competition that evokes memories so vivid, so breathtaking of heroes of yesteryear the Peles of Brazil, Cruyf — Dutchman, Maradona — Argentina, Gerd Muller — Germany, Ronald — Brazil, Rossi — Italy.
The great quality of football
You can go to see the greatest show in the world. You can go to see the greatest film with top stars and once you have seen it you know what it’s about, and if you can go again you know what to expect. You can go tomorrow and see Argentina play Croatia, you could come and see the same two teams play on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. You would never know what the outcome of these games would be. I think this is the great quality that football has.
The pressure which was put on the man with the ball from both teams was massive, a cracking game which had anyone watching being agitated with Maradona crying and biting his nails and the Argentina coach going up and down the touchline in the 90 mins. He could have covered a journey from Bulawayo to Gweru, he even took off his jacket. Now we know where Messi copied the tattoos from.
A superb finish on the first goal after a tragic mistake from Argentina’s goal keeper. The second goal for Croatia, who won the match 3-0, was a sensational strike, a goal which makes you want to be somewhere else if you an Argentinean supporter.
Argentina were playing with their hearts and no brains. For Croatia, the selection of players saw them playing for one another, not individual performance and at the end, we all agree Argentina was taught a tactical lesson. I have to mention this, the referee was so impressive, covering every inch of the grass. On the substitution of Aguero, I think it was early and wrong by the Argentina coach.
Senegal vs Poland
Who here in Africa is not going to celebrate a win for an African nation, the first one in Russia 2018? Congratulations, Hurray!
Nigeria vs Iceland: When a team loses it is usually not because they played 4-4-2 instead of some other system, it is most frequency because the team failed to perform well during one or more of the three key moments of the game. These are:
(a) When the team has possession of the ball.
(b) When the team has possession of the ball.
(c)When the team does not have possession of the ball. When possession changes from team to team.
Congratulations Green Eagles of Nigeria, you did apply the three key moments. You made the African continent proud.
Talen vision vs Bosso 90
League game — Gifford High School (23-06/2018)
I just do not understand the media houses labelling Highlanders’ first team as the ECD project. Who is developing who? If I may ask Melusi Sibanda the Bosso 90 coach who develops players before they graduate to first team, he has an ECD project he is developing young players but when is this developing processing going to end. What I know is if you are good enough to play in the first team you are old enough to compete irrespective of age. Can Ariel Sibanda, Honest Moyo, Adiarn Silla, Brian Banda, Sianchali, Makaruse, Tendai Ndlovu, Peter Muduhwa, Gabriel Nyoni and Ozias Zibande be said to be “Early Childhood Development”. I ask that because this is 98% of the players who have been in the first team for the past two to three seasons. I rest my case.
Back to the pitch
Bosso 90 coach’s tactics worked so well for him as he said after the game that they were going to absorb the pressure from their opponents and catch them on counter attacks. True, the first goal was an unstoppable cracker from 25 meters in the 53th minute by Darlington Mukuni who gave Emmanuel Dare the Talen Vision goalkeeper no chance. This was the first time they had a shot on target in the game.
Then came the goal which decided the contest. A free kick outside the box on the right side after some clumsy tackle by Talen Vision defender was beautifully flighted to the far post and met by a majestical jump by Mustaf Phiri who jack-knifed the ball to the far post. The golden boys started the game on the offensive with good finishing and they could have scored at least two goals. In the first 15 minutes there was some dazzling dribbling by Osi Minuri of Talen Vision in the box .
I could see World Cup action as he was sliding a pass to a teammate who shot weekly in the hands of Erick Nyathi the Bosso 90 goalie who had a good game. Talen Vision were let down with their play which by-passed the midfield, ending in the strong area of Bosso 90 where there were tall central defenders. The recruitment of this team, just a look at the frames on these players you can see talent at its best come the end of the season. My advice to coaches working with players providing feedback.
-Give verbal feedback when working with inexperienced players.
-Keep information short and simple (kiss).
-Give the players time to process their own feedback.
-Ask questions to check understanding and encourage problem solving.
– Encourage the players to focus on what their actions feel like rather the outcome.
– Use feedback as praise and reward effort as well as attainment.
