Why is this so important?
It is important because: art is essentially valuable, it is necessary for a successful economy, for our national prestige, to our mental health, to our social cohesion, to our sense of identity, to our happiness and to our well-being.
The arts can bring considerable benefits to the areas of social, economic and general well-being; Beginning with the quality of the art itself. Zimbabwe has invested in artistic excellence since pre-independence, and should continue to invest in artistic excellence for the long term.
The success of the commercial arts sector and the creative economy depends on public support and patronage and a Government policy that places a healthy society at the heart of its agenda. Investment in arts plays a vital role in the journey from talent to the creative industries, which are fundamental to future competitive- ness.
Arts and culture are central to tourism.
Visionary leaders and organisations could occupy a major place in the society – as civic leaders they could contribute to the cohesion of their local communities, civic pride and quality of life – through the arts, which enjoy a global reputation for excellence and innovation.
Sustained support of the arts will allow them to play a vital role in Zimbabwe’s economic recovery.
The creative arts industry of Zimbabwe was admired the world over, and has a proven record for generating cohesion and contributing to the welfare of society. It has vast potential for the country in economic terms, and in terms of the kind of society Zimbabweans want to be.
