MARK Williams will go into today’s second round of the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open sitting as the highest-placed local player after carding an impressive four-under-par 68 at Royal Harare.
The Bulawayo-born but South Africa-based professional will plunge into the second round tied in sixth place.
Williams will carry the nation’s hopes of a home winner when he tees off alongside Madalitso Muthiya of Zambia and Daniel Greene at 7:46am this morning. Ryan Cairns, who has just returned from injury, carded a one-under-par 71.
Cairns was tied with amateur golfer Tonderai Masunga one one-under par after the first round.
“I hope to do well and playing in the morning will help as the greens will not be slippery. I would like to improve on reading the lines and I believe everything will go on well,” said Cairns.
Masunga, who is in the Zimbabwe Golf Association national team that will leave for the Zone VI Games in Uganda on Monday, said he was looking forward for a better show today.
“It feels good to be among the top (golfers) and I hope to do well tomorrow (today). I just went out to enjoy myself and it worked well for me,” said Masunga.
“Going into tomorrow’s round, I will only focus on proceeding to the final round. “I am happy to be among the top professionals as it is a learning curve for me. I will just continue to believe in myself.” Veteran Day Muyambo was on level par 72, Garry Thompson was on two — over par along with amateur Garth Dale, Tongo Charamba and Greg Bentley.
