A RARE Winter management camp is on for local sports leaders where a number of issues affecting national sporting disciplines are set to be discussed with possible solutions proffered at Matopos in Bulawayo next month.
The Winter sports management camp, a brainchild of the Sports Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe will run from July 24-26 and is expected to bring together administrators from various institutions such as clubs, schools, companies and tertiary institutions.
The SLIZ is a body whose mission is to facilitate and provide a conducive environment for optimum growth and advancement of the nation’s sports leaders with emphasis on capacity building and professional development in line with the existing global trends.
Institute director Russell Mhiribidi said yesterday that although the winter management camp was a unique event for sports leaders in the country and the Southern African region, it was a regular occurrence in Europe and it offered the administrators a chance to discuss problems affecting them.
Mhiribidi said other professionals such as lawyers and chartered accountants hold similar workshops.
Most of the sports associations in the country have been battling for viability in a tough economic environment where sponsorship levels have drastically dwindled. Football as the country’s flagship sport has naturally been in the forefront and the incessant conflicts among the game’s leaders and lack of corporate governance has not helped the national game’s cause either.
“We want to discuss issues affecting our sports. We believe that the problems in all our sporting associations are generic and it is only that football’s problems are amplified. So we have a number of speakers who will also share their experiences with the sports leaders and I am sure we will come up with some solutions to the challenges being faced.
“We want sport to contribute to the GDP of the country. Sport is one of the ways that can contribute to the success of ZimAsset,’’ Mhiribidi said.
