A WITNESS has recounted the horror he endured when a severe storm pounded Buchwa, Mberengwa, this week.
There are reports that a Grade 3 kid was killed although H-Metro was unable to verify the authenticity of that report at the time of going to press.
The local secondary school suffered extensive damage.
Zvomukonde Secondary School’s classroom roofs were all blown off.
Speaking to H-Metro Kudzai Mhandarume, a witness and local resident, said:
“It was the worst day of my life, we were trapped like rats.
“Cars and rubbish containers were being blown down the streets.
“The water was rising significantly.
“One, a Grade 3 child at Zvomukonde Primary School, is said to have been killed after being struck by a falling block while seeking shelter from the rain.
“A lot of people, including students, were injured and had to seek medical attention at Shabani Hospital.
“At Zvomukonde Secondary School, almost all the roofs were blown away, it’s a disaster on its own.”
He added:
“Torrential rain on Tuesday triggered flash floods which swept away bridges and buildings and forced people to climb onto roofs or cling to trees to survive.
“The rains that hit this side were very scary, the rain was very violent, mvura yanaya kuno Buchwa yanga yakaipa, mhepo too much.
“The floods have swept away key infrastructure, including bridges, and 27 houses were destroyed.”
Thousands of people in Buchwa have been left without water and electricity.
“The storm’s ferocity destroyed 27 houses, with roofs being blown away and structures being severely damaged.
“Several students were injured and were referred to Shabani Hospital for treatment.”
