WHILE some stepfamilies achieve harmony, the relationship between stepmothers and stepchildren is often a source of friction, and sometimes, outright hostility.
This strained dynamic tragically played out when Jelina Ndlovu (55) from Khame Village, Madlambuzi area under Chief Masendu in Plumtree, Matabeleland South Province, brutally assaulted her 15-year-old stepdaughter.
The assault was reportedly punishment for the girl eating popcorn intended for Ndlovu’s own child, who was at school. As a result of the beating, the victim reportedly suffered a stroke.
This was heard when Ndlovu appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware, charged with physical abuse.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months imprisonment, wholly suspended for a period of five years, on condition that she does not, within that period, commit any offense involving physical violence that results in imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The State’s case as presented by prosecutor Selestine Madziwa was that sometime in July 2024, at Ndlovu’s homestead, she asked the complainant to assist with kitchen chores, as the complainant was not currently living with her.
Ndlovu then left the complainant in the kitchen. Upon her return, Ndlovu discovered that the complainant had eaten the popcorn intended for her child, who was at school.
Ndlovu then took a stick and assaulted the complainant on the thigh and head multiple times. The complainant subsequently returned to her own homestead.
Later that month, she experienced difficulty walking and went to a clinic where she was treated for a stroke.
In January this year, the complainant’s aunt, Nkanyezi Moyo, took her to Plumtree Hospital for further treatment.
It was there that the assault by Ndlovu came to light. The matter was then reported to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
Medical evidence confirmed that the complainant suffered a stroke as a result of the assault, and a medical affidavit was presented as evidence in court.
