Woman (63) battles for life after son’s axe rampage

A 63 YEAR-OLD Nkayi woman is battling for her life after she was axed allegedly by her 29-year-old son who is suspected to be mentally ill.

The suspect, Shackman Dube has since been arrested on an attempted murder charge and investigations are underway.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident which occurred on November 4, saying the suspect struck his mother Christine Dube of Majoyi area for reprimanding him for burning his clothes.

The woman was rushed to Nkayi District Hospital where she is admitted.

“On 4 November 2024 at around 9 am, a report of attempted murder was received at ZRP Nkayi after the complainant, a 63-year-old woman was struck with an axe once on the head by her son who is suspected to be mentally ill,” said Insp Banda.

He said on that particular day, the victim was at her homestead in Majoyi area, Nkayi when she had a misunderstanding with the suspect. During the argument, Shackman insulted the complainant before he took his clothes and burnt them.

“The victim reprimanded the suspect, which angered him and he took an axe and struck his mother once on the head and she sustained a deep cut,” said Insp Banda.
