A 60-YEAR-OLD Chipinge woman who feared being kidnapped jumped off a Zinara owned pick-up truck that had failed to stop at a bus stop she had indicated.She landed on the tarmac headlong and sustained serious head injuries.
Syria Makuyana of Maraka Village was rushed to Chipinge District Hospital where she died the following day. The incident occurred on May 13 at the 95km peg near Chako Business Centre along Birchenough Bridge-Mt Selinda Road.
Chipinge District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera, said Gift Manyokovere (41) of Maunganidze Village under Chief Mutema was driving a Foton truck with two passengers on board in the loading box.
“On approaching the 95km peg near where Makuyana wanted to be dropped, the driver did not stop at the bus stop. Syria thought that she was being kidnapped and she jumped off the moving vehicle and fell headlong, crushing her head against the tarmac road. She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Chipinge District Hospital where she was admitted and later died the following day.
“The vehicle did not sustain any damages and was held at Chipinge Traffic Police Station for inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Department,” he said.
The driver of the vehicle who is alleged to have tried to conceal the accident is being charged for failing to report it within 24 hours.
“The driver made a report to the police during the night of the following day after the incident occurred and has been charged for failing to report an accident within 24 hours,” he said.
