A GUTU woman was allegedly attacked and eaten by hyenas after she left her brother’s homestead in a huff at night following a dispute over a beer pot with her sister-in-law.
Angeline Chuma, 46, of Chief Denhere in Chatsworth allegedly had a heated argument with her brother’s wife over the use of a clay pot to brew beer.
The incident happened on Monday last week at around 7PM.
Relatives found Chuma’s skull and arms in a bush, two days after her disappearance.
A relative, Amon Mukuya of Chatsworth said on the fateful day, Chuma, who was staying with her brother Trynos Chuma, asked for a traditional pot from Laiza Munemo, her brother’s wife as she wanted to brew beer for sale. Munemo refused.
“Munemo’s refusal angered Angeline. She started shouting at her sister-in-law and accusing her of a number of unfounded things,” said Mukuya.
She said Munemo responded harshly and asked her to leave her homestead.
“Munemo told her in no uncertain terms that she was foul-mouthed and should leave her homestead. Incensed by her sister-in-law’s outburst, Chuma stormed out of the homestead at around 7PM. On Wednesday relatives teamed up with neighbours and searched for her. After a long search in a nearby bush, the relatives came across her skull and limbs. They also discovered hyenas’ footprints, a confirmation that she could have been devoured by the wild animals,” he said.
The relatives, said Mukuya, found at the scene a brown skirt and black woollen hat that Chuma was wearing on the night she disappeared. A report was made to Chatsworth police who took the remains to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
This incident comes in the wake of a similar incident that occurred in Chief Munyaradzi’s area late last month when an elderly woman was attacked and eaten by hyenas at a farm.
