Woman claims hubby assaults her over hair cut

A Harare woman claims her husband has been assaulting her after she cut her hair.

Nomsa Chidodo says she cut the hair and also put design line across her head without her husband, Edmore Musongwe’s knowledge.

Musongwe claims his wife’s new hairstyle goes against his beliefs and he cannot let her face his relatives in such a state.

The couple has clashed over the issue for the past weeks with Musongwe assaulting Chidodo over the issue.

The matter has now spilled into the courts after Chidodo applied for a protection order alleging verbal and physical abuse by Musongwe.

“He has been assaulting me for having cut my hair short, he says he does not like the lines drawn across my head.

“I am an adult and I can choose how I want to look, he can’t be ordering me on how I should look,” said Chidodo.

She added;

“He has been threatening to kill himself over the haircut accusing me of lacking discipline.

“He insulted my parents accusing them of failing to instil good morals in me.

“I want him to stop abusing me because l am tired of his strict behaviour.” she said.

Musongwe said his wife was disrespectful and lacked qualities of a good wife.

“ Yes, l assaulted her because of the haircut because I felt she had gone out of line, these haircuts are for loose women, and I can’t have my wife having the same.

“I am a man of high morals, and I don’t want her to bring such behaviour to my children.

“She has to change and get back to growing her hair or applying weaves. This is the only option for us to stay peacefully,” said Musongwe.

Presiding over the hearing, magistrate Meenal Narotam, granted the protection order against Musongwe advising the couple to maintain peace.
