A HARARE woman yesterday claimed US$320 maintenance from her ex-husband for their Form One child.
Caroline Kuveya accused her ex-husband, John Jitiya, of neglecting his responsibilities.
John offered to pay US$120, inclusive of fees, and told the court he had remarried and has two other kids.
“I’m a driver earning R2 000 per trip and I get called from time to time since I’m not permanently employed.
“On average, a month, I get R6 000 or R8 000, depending on how often I am called,” he said.
Caroline rejected the offer saying their daughter’s school fees alone was US$522 per term and she needed groceries and toiletries every month.
“Our daughter is in Form One and in need of a lot of things, so he should add to his offer to cover the fees and I will do the rest.
“She needs to go for extra lessons, bus fare, tuck, stationery, uniforms and medicals.
“If he pays fees I will take care of the rest,” she said.
Magistrate Sharon Mashavira ordered John to pay US$150 saying he was a man of means even though his income was not consistent.
