Police in Mashonaland Central have urged people to take depressed relatives seriously following the death of a 25-year-old woman with disability, who committed suicide after questioning her aunt why she was different.

Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo said Edna Mubishi from Trinity Farm asked her aunt Agnes why she was born different, before wailing in distress.

Asst Insp Dhliwayo said Agnes managed to calm her down and they retired to sleep in different bedrooms.

The following day, Agnes woke up and could not find Edna in her room and started searching for her.

She met Tabeth Chokufa who informed her that a body was found floating at Trinity Dam.

A report was made to police and Edna’s body was retrieved and sent to St Alberts Hospital for a post mortem.

Meanwhile in Shamva, 32-year-old Rita Salimu drank rat poison after her husband expressed desire to take a second wife.

She died while the husband Onious Tsuro (36) was looking for transport to take her to Shamva Hospital.

“When approached by relatives or friends who are in need of counselling, please take them seriously to avoid a sense of helplessness,” said Asst Insp Dhliwayo.

“It is disheartening that a number of people are committing suicide. Suicide is a worse solution to a psychological problem.”
