A woman from Zvishavane who was set to appear in court facing assault charges decided to commit suicide to escape jail.
Diaries Sibanda (45) was found hanging from a tree by her husband Knowledge Kiwa at Machalaga mountains on 14 September at around 4pm. This was after she sent a text message toher husband informing him that if she does not arrive home he should look for her at Machalaga mountains.
Sibanda was out of custody facing assault charges and was set to appear in court on 21 September for trial. The crime against her was that she allegedly beat her daughter-in-law and fractured her arm.
It seems she thought she would be thrown into jail so in a bid to evade a jail sentence she opted to commit suicide.
Circumstances are that on 9 September at around 4pm, Sibanda told her husband that she was heading to Bulawayo to visit her relatives. Later she phoned her husband claiming that she had arrived in Bulawayo.
On 10 September, Sibanda sent a text message to her husband saying that she was leaving Bulawayo for Zvishavane.
It is said she sent another text message saying that if she failed to arrive home they ought to look for her at Machalaga mountains.
On the day in question Sibanda did not come home prompting her husband to look for her at Machalaga mountains where he found her hanging from a tree and reported the matter to the police.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident.
