MUTARE City Council has urged business operators around the city with expired trading licences to urgently prioritise their renewal.

In a notice issued yesterday, the local authority said the window period provided by the Shop Licence Act lapsed on January 31.

“With effect from February 1 2022 (today), no shop will be allowed to open for business without a shop licence. According to the Shop Licence Act, Chapter 14:17, Section 12, subsection (4), it stipulates that: “Any person who fails to take out or renew a licence within one month of the date on which they become liable to take out or renew the licence shall be liable to a penalty of one-twelfth which has elapsed since their liability in that regard arose provided that the amount of any penalty which is payable in terms of this subsection in respect of any one year shall not exceed the appropriate licence fee concerned,” reads the statement.

City of Mutare said it started the issuance of licence renewal reminders in October last year and expects that businesses are operating in compliance with the Act.

The local authority said it will carry out a licence inspecting blitz beginning today.
