A Harare woman yesterday claimed spousal maintenance, saying she feels neglected by her husband.
Caroline Charadza yesterday told magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini that her husband, James Masimba, isn’t taking care of her as a husband is expected to.
“Your Worship, my husband has since abandoned me and the children. I have been operated on four times and can no longer work for myself. I want him to take care of me and the children.
“I do not have enough food and clothes, and the children also need clothes, school uniforms and transport to and from school. I want him to give me US$130 for my upkeep and the children.
“I am his responsibility because we are legally married, and so are the kids. He should take care of us,” she said.
James offered Caroline US$80.
“I am employed as a driver, and I do not earn much. I cannot afford to give her the amount she is claiming because I have other responsibilities.
“I am a father of three minors and also assisting my mother. I am offering her US$80 per month for food and I will continue paying fees for the children.
Caroline interjected:
“I do not accept the offer because the children do not have enough uniforms as we speak.”
Magistrate Dhlamini ordered James to pay US$100 every month plus school fees.
