A WOMAN appeared in court yesterday claiming spousal maintenance from her motor mechanic husband.

Memory Ngwerume took her husband, Lovemore Murewa, to the Harare Civil Court claiming US$190 in spousal maintenance.

Ngwerume told the court that she needed assistance because she could no longer work. “I am now a hypertension patient. I have a spinal cord problem and arthritis as well as another disease which he is aware of.

“I cannot work anymore so he must take care of me. If you see an old woman like me coming to this court, it means a lot.  I am in a lot of debt in the rural areas because he has not been giving me anything,” she said.

In response, Murewa offered US$50 plus $74 500. “The amount she is claiming is my full allowance so I can give her US$50.

“I will also give her half of my salary of $149 000 per month.

“I have a child, who is at university, and another in Form Six, whose fees I pay.  I have a residential stand where I am building a house and another house in Rusape that needs maintenance,” he said.

Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ruled that Murewa should pay $70 000 plus US$80 in spousal maintenance every month.
