A Harare woman was yesterday granted a peace order against her abusive husband who allegedly insults her regularly.

Sophia Chirilele told Harare Civil Court Magistrate Sharon Mashavira that her estranged husband Kazamola Chirilele abuses her verbally and emotionally and threatens to kill her.

“He is my ex-husband and we separated 10 years ago,” she said. “Since that time I have been living in hell, getting all the insults, and him threatening to kill me in front of my children. I cannot even eat my food because he threatens to poison me and I am living in fear.

“At one time he brought his girlfriend into my house, but I never complained because our divorce is still before the courts.”

Kazamola denied the accusations stating that Sophia is the one who abused him.

“I never argue with her, rather she calls me all sorts of names,” he said. “I also need the peace order if it can protect me because I am diabetic and I have high blood pressure and she is in the habit of scolding me, saying I am like a dog in front of our children.

“I went to Domboshava and upon my return she chased me from home and when my children misbehave she insults them saying they are dogs like me.”

Kazamola said he no longer loved Sophia, hence had no objections if the peace order was granted.

Ms Mashavira ordered the couple not to verbally abuse each other and to approach the High Court which will determine who will leave or who will reside at the matrimonial home.

Domestic violence is a significant problem in Zimbabwe with high rates of physical, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse affecting both men and women.
