A WOMAN is fending for her children by washing buses at the Market Square terminus.
The woman, Precious, popularly known as Mai Lameck, is a divorced mother of three.
“I started doing this job after I divorced my husband.
“Following the divorce, things were difficult and I struggled to care for my children. That’s when I decided to sweep inside the buses for a living.
“Bus drivers were impressed by my guts and started asking me to work for them.
“At first, it was difficult to get accepted by some male counterparts in the same business as they were jealous of me and started to say that I might be getting the job offers because the drivers were interested in me.
“At times, I would run out of soap and approach a male counterpart to assist and they would refuse to help.”
She added:
“I can take care of my three children as a single mother because of this job but I hope to get a passport so that I can have another business on the side as my children are growing up hence their demands are also growing.”
A friend, Loice Maruni, hailed her for working hard.
“Precious is my friend, she is hardworking. She starts work at 5 am and does not have time to talk to a lot of people as she is focused on working for her children.
“She plays round robin for as little as 50 cents to a dollar to buy her children some groceries.”
