A 57-year-old woman has been fined $20 000 or 60 days in jail for attaching her tenant’s property over rent arrears.

Sithokozile Ndlovu pleaded guilty to attaching her tenant’s property for failing to settle rentals when she appeared before Harare magistrate Caroline Matanga.

The State proved that on December 24, Sithokozile locked her tenant, Sekesai  Mlalazi, out of her lodgings after she failed to pay rentals. The court heard that on December 1, Sekesai failed to pay her rentals and informed her landlady that she was going to settle it as soon as she got the money.

However, the landlady was having none of it and locked Sekesai and her family outside the gate.

Sekesai begged Sithokozile to allow her to collect her property so she could look for alternative accommodation since she was no longer welcome.

But Sithokozile told Sekesai to first settle her arrears before she could allow her access to her household property.

Faith Mavhudzi appeared for the State.
