TALENT Zaranyika (35) from Mt Darwin has been convicted and sentenced for smuggling second-hand shoes into the country in contravention of customs regulations.

Presiding over the case, magistrate Mrs Annie Ndiraya found Zaranyika guilty of violating Section 174 (2)(b) of the Customs and Excise Act (Chapter 23:04), which pertains to failure to account for goods.

Zaranyika was ordered to pay a fine of US$300 or face three months in prison as an alternative.

Prosecutor Mrs Tafadzwa Zulu said detectives from CID received a tip-off on July 21, 2025 regarding Zaranyika’s possession of the contraband.

She was subsequently intercepted at Mega Watt, where she was found carrying 65 pairs of second-hand shoes in a white sack without Zimra declaration papers.

During questioning, Zaranyika failed to produce the requisite ZIMRA declaration forms or receipts to prove the lawful importation of the goods.

Mrs Zulu successfully argued that Zaranyika knowingly attempted to evade customs procedures, leading to her conviction.
