A 30-YEAR-OLD Nyanga woman will spent the next four years in jail after being convicted of culpable homicide following a nasty physical confrontation with her late father-in-law.
Melody Fombe (30), of Dzapasi Village, under Chief Katerere, was sentenced to five years in jail by Mutare regional magistrate, Mrs Phathekile Msipa, who suspended one year on the usual conditions for five years.
Prosecutor, Mr Last Goredema told the court that on August 5 last year, at around 4am, the deceased, Conlious Chitambwe, his daughter, Mitchel, and Fombe were at home when the incident happened.
Mitchel later left to fetch firewood.
She left Chitambwe and Fombe at home.
A misunderstanding arose between the two in-laws, resulting in the accused assaulting Chitambwe with open hands, pushing him against a sofa, resulting in the deceased sustaining serious injuries.
He was rushed to Nyanga District Hospital, and later referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for further management.
On September 16, 2024, Chitambwe succumbed to the injuries sustained during the scuffle.
On September 23, 2024, a post-mortem was done by Dr Robert Guillen, and the results were produced in court as an exhibit.
