A consignment of almost 60kg of mbanje was found by police in Highlands, Harare, resulting in the arrest of Memory Mukwasani (33) who appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei last Friday, facing charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.
According to prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti, the bust occurred in the early hours of July 2.
Detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Harare received a tip-off that a Clarity Coaches bus, with South African registration XZG 570 GP, was transporting mbanje destined for Harare. The detectives set up an ambush along the Masvingo highway at the Skyline tollgate.
At around 4am, they spotted the bus and followed it as it turned off into Arcturus Road in eastern Harare, before parking at a property in Highlands.
The detectives observed the bus crew offloading groceries and fruit into a DAF truck before moving in to search the bus.
During the search, officers discovered several plastic-wrapped packages of mbanje weighing 59,545kg with an estimated street value of US$5 954.
