WOMEN NEARLY LOSES HOUSE IN TITLE DEEDS FRAUD

A HILLSIDE woman nearly lost her house over a loan which was secured after her title deeds were tendered as security without her knowledge.

Tecla Murembeni, 55, had to fork out US$20 000 to save her house, which is along Leroux Drive in Hillside, from being sold to recover a loan secured by Reason Chitehwe, a man she used to share an office with.

Reason secured the loan last year, using Tecla’s title deeds as collateral, without her authority.

The two used to share the same office, which was located along Herbert Chitepo Avenue in Harare.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case.

“Circumstances are that in October 2023, some lawyers approached the complainant at her place of residence and informed her that she had earlier on applied for a loan amounting to US$33 000 from them and had failed to pay back.

“They also indicated that because of her failure to pay, they wanted to sell her house to recover their money.

“Complainant got surprised by this as she had never taken the said loan from them.

“She inquired how the loan was taken and they told her that the accused person was the one who applied for the loan and also surrendered title deeds in respect of complainant’s house to them as collateral.

“The accused person was supposed to pay US$48 000, including interest, but he failed to pay the money.

“Complainant later on paid US$20 000 to the said lawyers to avoid having her house sold.

“She was defrauded a total of US$48 000 as a result of the accused person’s misrepresentation,” said Insp Chakanza.
