Women Soccer League’s Super 18

ZIMBABWE Women Soccer League ended last week with no team being demoted.
Instead, four more teams were added to the league to make them 18.Initially, the bottom four teams were supposed to be relegated, but after a meeting held on February 21, it was agreed that four teams from the four regions should be added.

The four teams promoted are ZRP Morris Queens from the Northern Region, Mwenezana from the Eastern Region, Cowdray Park Queens from the Southern and Chapungu Queens from the Central Region.

During the meeting there was also debate on whether to have two regions (Region A and B) instead of having a national league. Region A will be made up of Eastern and Northern regions, while Region B will be made up of Southern and Central region, but most people voted for the national league.

The 2015 season will commence on April 25 and the first round is likely to end in August.

In the just-ended season, a total of 205 matches were played and Flame Lily finished on top after they managed to acquire 53 points off 20 starts.

Early pacesetters Black Rhinos Queens were on second place with 49 points from 18 matches, while Bindura giants Auckland Queens settled for third position with 27 points from 20 matches.

Mutare representatives, Tenax Queens, finished on fourth position with 22 points from 16 starts.

Conduit Academy of Guruve were on the fifth position with 21 points from 14 matches.

Zimbabwe Women Soccer League vice-chairperson Elizabeth Langa said the future of women football was bright despite lack of sponsorship.

“The future of women football is bright though we don’t have a sponsor. We are hoping that this coming season a lot will change and we will try our best to get sponsorship,” she said.

Meanwhile, the ZWSL boss, Mirriam Sibanda, lost her husband, Nkululeko Sibanda, last Saturday evening.

Sibanda (42) died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. He was the owner of Northern Region Division One outfit, Twalumba FC and was heavily involved in athletics, sponsoring a marathon in Binga, his home area.
